Art instructor and art club advisor at River Valley High School, ALEXANDRA  SPROWLS has been teaching drawing and painting for the last eighteen years in the Yuba City Unified School District and at Butte College. She received her B.A. in Studio Art from California State University, Chico, and her M.A. in Painting from the San Francisco Art Institute. Her work has been exhibited in many galleries, most recently in the new Painting and Sculpture Outpost in Marysville. Ranging from the abstract to images of land and the natural world, Alexandra explores sense of place through memory and internalized states. As she layers paint on canvas to create bright forms of local haunts, her work captures the regeneration of nature after the ravages of fire and flood. To be in nature, surrounded by recordings of time, is where she is most inspired.

As a child living a mile outside the gold field town of Hammonton, LARRY “DUDE” BARTOS - GREEN spent many hours alongside his twin brother working with their hands and using their imaginations to create toys out of scrap metal and wood. During their senior year of high school they joined the Naval Reserve for an eight year hitch. It’s no surprise that his vocation became metalworking--first as a machinist in a heavy job shop, and then, as an instructor making a career of teaching machinist training and welding fabrication at Marysville and Yuba City High Schools, and night classes at Yuba College. After retirement, Dude and his wife traveled to Canada, Alaska, Europe, and South Dakota to visit Dude’s Czech relatives. Dude’s surname “Bartos” belongs to his mother’s side of the family living in the Czech Republic. Inspired by his travels, Dude began making metal art representing the birds and animals in our local area--salmon, cranes, herons, and dragonflies. As his outdoor metal/wood sculptures age, weathering and lichen growth add an unique quality to each one.

The Theater Art Gallery is open every week, Thursday through Saturday, from noon to 5:00 pm, and Wednesday by appointment. Call 908-5704 or 329-1733. Proceeds from The Theater Art Gallery benefit the Sutter Performing Arts Association’s effort to renovate the Sutter Theater, turning it into a viable community center.  For more information, please visit our website at:  www.suttertheater.org, or visit us on Facebook.
