After graduating from Quincy High School, ALAN  HANLEY served in the US Navy for eight years and earned a BFA in painting from the San Francisco Art Institute. A recipient of many awards and scholarships for painting, he went on to receive a MFA degree from San Francisco Art Institute. Since then, he has shown his work in many Northern California art galleries. Alan also has been an art instructor at Yuba College, Tierra Buena, and Gray Avenue Middle School. In October of 2017, Alan lost everything--his home and all his accumulated artwork, tools, and supplies--in the Cascade fire in Loma Rica. With few materials available to him, Alan began to create art on paper with images of what remained in the ashes. His intention was to show a mere glimpse of what a disaster does. His work beckons the viewer to a time in our recent past. After all Alan has endured, he is extremely upbeat and optimistic and continues to make art with paint, wood, and stone. For him, the magic is in the “doing,” the making of a piece In this way, he is able to fuse his inner feelings and reactions to those feelings in an exhibit of artistic beauty and relevance.

Six years ago NIKKI PEARSON took her first ceramics class and fell in love with it as soon as she put the clay in her hands. Never before had she had the opportunity to touch clay in the raw, but she was immediately taken by it. She was searching for a creative outlet to help her manage her emotional highs and lows, and gratefully ceramics was the key. Her husband, son, and friends built a tiny studio for her in their back yard--a haven for her to create and tap into her inner spirit. Even though it is often ceiling-high with glazes, supplies, and pots, her studio is her favorite place in the world to be. It never feels crowded to her, and there are no limits or boundaries for her when Nikki is elbows-deep in clay.

The Theater Art Gallery is open every week, Thursday through Saturday, from noon to 5:00 pm, and Wednesday by appointment. Call 908-5704 or 329-1733. Proceeds from The Theater Art Gallery benefit the Sutter Performing Arts Association’s effort to renovate the Sutter Theater, turning it into a viable community center.  For more information, please visit our website at:  www.suttertheater.org, or visit us on Facebook.
