Description:

Walk into a world Japanese mysticism as Yuba Sutter Arts premieres a selection of family friendly Japanese animated films at our first ever Yuba Sutter Anime Film Festival. The in-depth story telling will pull at your heart strings as you embark through the narratives of strong and determined youth battling impossible scenarios.

The festival will comprised mostly of Studio Ghibli films along with another film developed by one of the studio’s former director. The films that will be shown are [in order of viewing] My Neighbor Totoro, The Cat Returns, Grave of the Fireflies, Mary and the Witch’s Flower, Spirited Away, and Ponyo, with a ten-minute intermission between each film.

Studio Ghibli stands as one of the most recognizable Japanese animation art studios’ in the world due to the sophisticated, creative films they have produced over the decades. Most notably working with Disney Japan for the distribution of their works, the studio has widely brought anime films to the general public of North America and Europe, allowing individuals to experience dynamically adaptive art film style in a multitude of beautifully well put together stories for all ages.

The “odd film out” of our set, Mary and the Witch’s Flower, is an anime developed by Studio Ponoc. The film has deep ties with Studio Ghibli with the producing studio’s founder, Yoshiaki Nishimura, being formerly the Lead Film Producer for Ghibli and the film’s director, Hiromasa Yonebayashi, being the youngest successful Film Director for Ghibli on their film The Secret World of Arrietty. Both have brought their shared dreams from Studio Ghibli to life with new perspective, making Mary and the Witch’s Flower a masterpiece in its own right.
