Greetings! You have probably heard me talk about film commissions and the work we have been doing to establish one right here in Yuba-Sutter. Well, I am excited to report that we have made some great progress in establishing Film Yuba-Sutter! The Film Yuba-Sutter committee met recently to go over all that has been accomplished since we put the funding into action! It’s been only a few months of build time and we are seeing things really start to come together.
I want to make sure to thank our partner investors at every opportunity! Those partners are Yuba Sutter Lodging Association, City of Yuba City, City of Marysville, Yuba County and Sutter County. Their investment in this effort is bringing the dream of having a Film Commission in Yuba-Sutter to life.
We are also grateful to our partner, Upstate Film Commission, for the work they are doing to build Film Yuba-Sutter. At the recent Film Yuba-Sutter Committee meeting they presented a quarterly report on the progress. I am happy to share that report with you here!
This is truly an amazing opportunity for our community to benefit through more tax revenue, job creation, tourism, and increased community pride. I am extremely proud of the Chamber’s work to bring this to fruition. Bringing the film industry to Yuba-Sutter will have a lasting and positive impact. With production comes people. People spending money in our community in numerous ways. This is huge and the benefits could be better than we have even imagined them to be. We are dreaming big here and taking the steps to make those dreams come true! We will continue to keep you in the loop as the program grows.
I think I will leave you with that. I hope you are enjoying your summer and staying cool. I look forward to sharing news from other areas of the Chamber in the coming weeks. Until then, take care!
Be well! Marni |

CalSavers Employer Compliance Deadline Approaching! CalSavers is California’s retirement savings program designed for the millions of Californians who lack a way to save for retirement at their job.
CalSavers was created by legislation passed in 2016 requiring California employers who do not offer an employer sponsored plan and have five or more employees to facilitate CalSavers – an automatic enrollment individual retirement account (IRA) with no employer fees or fiduciary liability.
California’s new mandate is phased in over three years, with deadlines based on employer size. Employers with five or more employees have until June 30, 2022, but are encouraged to register early. The registration deadlines for employers with more than 50 employees have passed. Eligible employers, who have not yet registered, should do so as soon as possible to avoid penalties.

YSEDC, in partnership with Sutter and Yuba counties has received funding from the California Office of the Small Business Advocate to administer a microbusiness grant program directly to microbusinesses within the two-county region. The intent of the funding is to provide relief to the hardest to reach microbusinesses and entrepreneurs. A microbusiness is defined as having $50,000 or less in gross revenues and five or fewer employees.
The California Office of the Small Business Advocate (Cal OSBA) has allocated funding to each county in the state based on population. YSEDC has $102,144 available to distribute to qualified microbusinesses in Sutter County and $80,077.29 to qualified microbusinesses in Yuba County. Qualified businesses may receive up to $2,500 in a one-time payment dependent upon approval of application and availability of funds. Grants will be made on a first come first-served basis until all funds are disbursed.
This is a grant program, not a loan, so businesses do not need to pay the money back. Per the CalOSBA Guidelines, some examples of eligible use of funds are: -
The purchase of equipment related to your business, i.e. lawn mower, certified food cart, hair dressing equipment, etc.
- Working capital to operate your business
- Application for, or renewal of, a local permit such as but not limited to, a permit to operate as a sidewalk vendor.
-
Payment of business debt accrued due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Costs resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic and related health and safety restrictions, or business interruptions or closures incurred as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. |

If you’re interested in ways to reach more people, and you’re ready to start maximizing technology, it’s time to look at these business solutions: List Building
You need an email list. It’s the best way to stay in touch with your customers, nurture them into a sale, and then remind them to come back. The other benefit to an email list is that it’s yours. You won’t lose access to it if you’re in Facebook jail or one of your social media platforms goes the way of MySpace (for those of you who are old enough to understand that reference).

#TestimonyTuesday is on behalf of Mariah Davis founder of Oakview Insurance Services, Inc.
Mariah has been an Ambassador since 2011 and her business has been an official member of the Chamber since 2015.
“We are proud to be a member and affiliated with the Yuba Sutter Chamber of Commerce. The chamber continues to add value through its networking and educational events. A true champion for small business, the Chamber continues to innovate and try new things all focused on small business growth. Attend a ribbon cutting, attend a wine’s down Wednesday, attend a business after hours event, get started and watch your business grow through the power of networking.”
Mariah also adds that, “You get out of the chamber what you put into it. It’s kinda like they open the door, but you have to walk through it. Having opportunities to network with other business owners in our community has been priceless, and that alone covers the cost of admission.” Thank you Mariah for your kind words on behalf of the Chamber! If you are looking for an insurance company, we encourage you to send Mariah and her team an email or call their office!
