Greetings Members!
Happy New Year! I hope that your 2023 is off to a good start! It certainly has been a wet start. It’s great to see this much needed rain.
I thought we could kick off our first E-Newsletter with an introduction to a new partnership that we have forged with Yuba City Unified School District called the Work Ready Yuba-Sutter, a program of the Chamber in partnership with Yuba-Sutter Schools. With the expertise and knowledge of Yuba-Sutter School staff/faculty, we recently launched this pilot program at River Valley High School.
The program teaches students the essential skills that employers are looking for in many entry-level positions. Participating students are learning aspects of good customer service, effective time management, communication skills, problem solving, teamwork and so much more. Once a student completes the courses with passing points, they will be invited to a mock interview set by Chamber representatives. The interviewers will then use a point system to grade their interview skills. Passing points will make them eligible to interview with Work Ready Yuba-Sutter participating employers. This is where you come in!
Are you looking for employees who are ready to work, are reliable, responsible and able to interact well with customers and peers alike? Students who complete this course will possess these skills. All we ask of businesses who would like to participate is to guarantee at least an interview with students who complete this program. There is no expectation that students be hired and you determine how many interviews you are able to conduct. If you have some interest in participating in this great pilot program, please contact me at msanders@yubasutterchamber.com. I can tell you more about it.
I just love the partnerships that the Chamber can create in the community. We have so many innovative, creative, and driven people who are always looking to create opportunities where gaps exist. Programs like Work Ready Yuba-Sutter are programs that we are really excited about because we know workforce development is important to our community. We hope you will join us in this endeavor!! I think I will leave it here for now. Please read through the newsletter to learn more about what’s happening at the Chamber.
We are deeply grateful to our community and our members for all the support the Chamber receives to help us fulfill our mission of “Building Relationships, Building Businesses & Building Community” and our vision to be “The premier business resource for Yuba-Sutter.”
Until next time, be well. Marni |

2023 UCAN Chamber Member Survey We want to hear from you!! Once again, the Chambers of Commerce associated with UCAN - the United Chamber Advocacy Network seek your perspective on key state-level public policy issues that impact your business, your employees, and our communities.
Since 2018, the UCAN chambers have worked together at the state level to advocate on behalf of your business….and we’ve had a good deal of success!! - Successfully lobbied against a bill that would have required employers to mandate COVID vaccines for their employees
- Successfully worked with the Newsom Administration to reestablish the job search requirement for individuals to qualify for COVID-related unemployment benefits
-
Successfully lobbied Gov. Newsom to veto a bill that would have increased costs to forest thinning projects which would have resulted in fewer acres treated to prevent wildfires and erected barriers to local companies to qualify for contracts
- Proactively cultivated relationships with the new legislators who assume their positions in 2023.
Please take a few minutes and respond to the survey link below. We want to know your views so we can amplify your voice in the state legislature! The UCAN Chamber Member Survey will be open until Friday, January 20. Please be sure to respond by this date so we can ensure your perspective is included in the 2023 UCAN State Policy Agenda.
Survey outcomes will be presented as part of the 2023 UCAN State Policy Agenda, shared at a gathering of our local legislators and chamber members on Thursday, March 2, from 2 to 4:30 pm (location tbd). Please mark your calendars!! |

Volunteers Needed for Point in Time (PIT) Count
The Sutter Yuba Homeless Consortium will be conducting their Bi-annual Point in Time (PIT) count this coming January and would love to have as many volunteers as possible. This count is what they submit to Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to give them a "snapshot" of people experiencing homelessness in our area.
On Monday, January 23, teams will assemble at 6:45am at Sam Brannan park in Yuba City, and Life Building Center in Marysville for a short briefing. Those teams will depart at 7am to their counting locations in Yuba City and Marysville and should be in place around 7:15am(right at sunrise.)
There will be a pancake breakfast at the park provided by Kiwanis and teams can return by 10am to get breakfast before going back out. In addition, Hope Point Nazarene will provide sack lunches for the volunteers as well.

Has the chaos and uncertainty of the past few years left you feeling stuck and unsure of your purpose in life?
Cherie Llacuna, Llacuna Matata Reiki, helps people through a form of energy healing called Reiki, that can help those who suffer from chronic pain, PTSD, trauma, anxiety, depression, and physical injuries. It provides relaxation, clarity and a feeling of "lightness” and helps reduce or eliminate negative response to life's triggers.
Cherie met a woman who did Reiki on animals, and, as she had many at the time, realized the benefits of this alternative method of healing. After several years of training, she was able to become certified in Reiki, as well as animal Reiki and Medical Reiki. Cherie can go into operating rooms and provide healing for not only the patient, but also the surgeon and all the other staff in the room. "Now more than ever, people need more options of managing their conditions in a holistic way. Keeping your energy healthy keeps your immune system healthy. " Cherie started Llacuna Matata Reiki in 2017 and has been an active member of the Chamber since 2020. All current Yuba-Sutter Chamber of Commerce members receive a 5-percent discount on her services, plus the first ten people who schedule a Reiki session with her and mention this post will be entered into a drawing for a free session.
To learn more about Llacuna Matata Reiki, contact Cherie at 530-844-7233 or llacunamatatareiki@gmail.com. You can also follow here on Social Media Llacuna Matata Reiki or www.instagram.com/llacunacherie/
