Theater Art Gallery MAY Artist Reception/Show

In May, The Theater Art Gallery in Yuba City presents paintings by ALEXANDRA  SPROWLS and metal/wood sculptures by LARRY “DUDE” BARTOS-GREEN. The exhibit opens with a reception for the artists on Thursday, May 2, from 5 - 7 pm. The event is free offering complimentary refreshments. The art show and sale runs from May 2 through May 31. The Theater Art Gallery is located under the striped awning at 756 Plumas Street, next to the Sutter Theater. Gallery hours are Thurs through Sat 12 - 5 pm, and Wed by appointment. Call 908-5704 or 329-1733. Visit us at www.suttertheater.org or on Facebook.

Art instructor and art club advisor at River Valley High School, ALEXANDRA  SPROWLS has been teaching drawing and painting for the last eighteen years in the Yuba City Unified School District and at Butte College. She received her B.A. in Studio Art from California State University, Chico, and her M.A. in Painting from the San Francisco Art Institute. Her work has been exhibited in many galleries, most recently in the new Painting and Sculpture Outpost in Marysville. Ranging from the abstract to images of land and the natural world, Alexandra explores sense of place through memory and internalized states. As she layers paint on canvas to create bright forms of local haunts, her work captures the regeneration of nature after the ravages of fire and flood. To be in nature, surrounded by recordings of time, is where she is most inspired.

As a child living a mile outside the gold field town of Hammonton, LARRY “DUDE” BARTOS - GREEN spent many hours alongside his twin brother working with their hands and using their imaginations to create toys out of scrap metal and wood. During their senior year of high school they joined the Naval Reserve for an eight year hitch. It’s no surprise that his vocation became metalworking--first as a machinist in a heavy job shop, and then, as an instructor making a career of teaching machinist training and welding fabrication at Marysville and Yuba City High Schools, and night classes at Yuba College. After retirement, Dude and his wife traveled to Canada, Alaska, Europe, and South Dakota to visit Dude’s Czech relatives. Dude’s surname “Bartos” belongs to his mother’s side of the family living in the Czech Republic. Inspired by his travels, Dude began making metal art representing the birds and animals in our local area--salmon, cranes, herons, and dragonflies. As his outdoor metal/wood sculptures age, weathering and lichen growth add an unique quality to each one.

The Theater Art Gallery is open every week, Thursday through Saturday, from noon to 5:00 pm, and Wednesday by appointment. Call 908-5704 or 329-1733. Proceeds from The Theater Art Gallery benefit the Sutter Performing Arts Association’s effort to renovate the Sutter Theater, turning it into a viable community center.  For more information, please visit our website at:  www.suttertheater.org, or visit us on Facebook.

Lord's Gym Kids Mud Run

The annual Lord’s Gym Kids Mud Run is FREE, and it’s taking over Oroville on Saturday, June 1, 2019!  The Kids Mud Run is a mile-long, obstacle course-style race for children ages 4-12. Kids will run, jump, swing and crawl through over 20+ exhilarating obstacles--not to mention mud!  The race is divided into three separate age groups (4-6, 7-9 & 10-12) with age-appropriate obstacles so that children can run together their friends and peers of the same age. This allows the race to be safe enough for little ones while also challenging the pre-teens. A special school competition, know as the “Superhero School Bell”, allows children to rack up points for their school by taking part and dressing up in their school’s colors.

In between races kids, will enjoy Mud Fest with inflatables, food and carnival style attractions.  Mud Fest will be running 9am-3pm at an additional cost.

The Theater Art Gallery June Reception and Show

Coming to The Theater Art Gallery in June are magnificent paintings by JACK  CHRISTIE and inspired fused glasswork by T. ROBERT DARROUGH. This enticing gallery exhibit runs from June 6 - 29, with a welcoming Artist Reception from 5 - 8 pm on Thursday, June 6. Come and enjoy our free event with complimentary refreshments, as you meet the artists and view their work. The reception coincides with the Downtown Business Association’s First Thursday Stroll. The gallery is located next to the Sutter Theater at 756 Plumas Street, downtown Yuba City. Hours: Thurs - Sat, 12 to 5 pm. Wed by appointment. Call 908-5704 or 329-1733. Visit us at www.suttertheater.org or on Facebook.

No stranger to the Fine Arts and the intricacies of art galleries, JACK  CHRISTIE is one of our region’s most recognized artists. For many years he owned and operated the upstairs art gallery in Yuba City’s Hillcrest Plaza known as “Christie’s Fine Art and Framing.” As a ten year old, he began drawing and painting and later honed his skills at the California College of Arts and Crafts. His late wife Diana encouraged him to seriously start painting again in his forties. Since then he has sold over 160 paintings and prints, and has shown work in local galleries, art shows, fairs, and Sacramento art clubs. Many of his oil paintings and watercolors depict rural farm buildings and tractors. He especially likes painting things that spark joy in his life. Recently, his focus has been painting watercolors of owners and their pets. Attention to detail comes through in all his sublime paintings.

Self-taught fused glass artist Tim Darrough goes by his artist name of T. ROBERT DARROUGH. He was born in Marysville and has been a Yuba-Sutter resident all his life. Ever since he wandered into a glass shop as a young man, he knew then and there that he would someday create beautiful glass designs. The intense desire he felt at the time led to his passion to create art stemming from his love of vivid colors, blending them to bring joy and pleasure to others. A recipient of many awards for his exquisite glasswork, including KVIE’s 2017 Art Auction award of Best in Class, Tim has exhibited his work in Sacramento art galleries and in galleries here in the Yuba-Sutter area. Be sure to view his stunning creations during the month of June.
