It teaches adults how to recognize the signs and symptoms of a potential mental health challenge, how to listen nonjudgmentally and give reassurance to a person who may be experiencing a mental health challenge, and how to refer a person to appropriate professional support. The workshops are designed to teach people how to approach, assess and provide assistance to someone who may be in the early stages of developing a mental health challenge or already in a mental health crisis. Topics covered include depression and anxiety, trauma, psychoses, suicidal thoughts, developing a self care plan, dealing with panic attacks, identifying a substance abuse crisis, and working with cultural differences and mental health. Lists of resources will be provided, which will prove invaluable in directing people to local agencies who can provide a wide variety of assistance and support.
